Three gay Democratic U.S. congressmen have sent a letter to the Department of Defense demanding a quicker response to resolving cases of LGBTQ+ people dishonorably expelled from the military under the former “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and the outright ban that preceded it. Signed by California Democratic U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia, the first out immigrant elected to Congress and the president of the most recent class of new legislators; Rep. Mark Pocan, the chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus from Wisconsin; and out Rep. Chris Pappas of New Hampshire, the letter was sent to Secretary Lloyd J. Austin.

Former President Trump told his supporters during a rally in Nevada that he is fine with being blamed for tanking the bipartisan border bill currently negotiated in the Senate.  [...] Rep. Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Robert Garcia (CA-42),a  Co-Chair of the Equality Caucus, wrote an oversight letter to the Secretary of Defense urging the Department seeking information on their efforts to proactively review and upgrade cases LGBTQI+ veterans who were discharged under less than honorable conditions for their sexual orientation prior to the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) 12 years ago. The Congressman was joined by Equality Caucus Chair Mark Pocan (WI-02) and Co-Chair Chris Pappas (NH-01).

Students who didn’t have a chance to enroll in college immediately after graduating high school will soon get additional help navigating higher education at Long Beach City College thanks to a $4 million federal grant. The U.S. Department of Education grant, which Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Long Beach, and LBCC Superintendent-President Mike Muñoz announced during a press conference this week, will allow the college to establish a new “Success and Completion Achievement Network.” [...] “This significant investment will enhance the college experience for non-traditional and students of color here in Long Beach,” Garcia, who helped secure the grant, said in the Monday, Jan. 22, press release. “We need to make sure all of the students in our community have the tools and support necessary for their academic success, which means using new approaches and funding to meaningfully uplift our students of color.”

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Robert Garcia (CA-42) was joined by Mayors for a Guaranteed Income (MGI) co-chair Michael Tubbs in introducing the “Guaranteed Income for Foster Youth Act.” The Congressman was joined by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (MN-05) as a co-lead on the bill. The legislation would create a new federal program to provide $1,000 a month to young adults exiting foster care for five years, and it is endorsed by Mayors and Counties for a Guaranteed Income and Liberation in a Generation. Congressman Garcia has been a strong advocate for Guaranteed Income projects, including during his tenure as Mayor of Long Beach. Under his leadership as Mayor, the City of Long Beach launched a universal basic income pilot.

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) quoted a line from the “Real Housewives” franchise in an effort to criticize former President Trump during a Wednesday House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing.

“And what do we have as Democrats? We have receipts, proof, a timeline, screenshots. We have everything we need to prove conclusively that foreign governments are funneling money through Trump properties and into Donald Trump’s pockets, all in violation of the Constitution,” Garcia said.
