The Italian fashion house has been making thousand-dollar garments out of vicuña wool for three decades, but congressman Robert Garcia believes local workers are being exploited in the process. “This seems to me as clearly exploitation and it is a huge multinational corporation that is owned by some of the wealthiest people in the world,” Garcia, a democrat from California, said in an interview with Bloomberg. “Seeing no benefit coming down to the immense labor that is happening here I think is really concerning.”

Robert Garcia, D-Calif., who spearheaded this effort, said that most immigrants his office helps only speak Spanish, meaning that his staff spends many hours ensuring constituents have access to USCIS forms in Spanish, but then also translating their Spanish-language answers and documents to English before submitting them to USCIS, as required by its current internal policy.

I came to this country as a young child and became a citizen in my early twenties. Becoming an American was the greatest honor of my life and I am eternally grateful for all this country has provided for me and my family.
I have experienced our immigration system firsthand and that is why I come to work in Washington D.C. every day to find real, common-sense solutions for the issues we are facing today. When I was growing up, I knew what a privilege it was to be in this country, and I have committed my life to giving back to the community that has led me to where I am today.
