A group of Democrats in Congress appealed to the largest U.S. companies Tuesday to hold onto their diversity, equity and inclusion programs, saying such efforts give everyone a fair chance at achieving the American dream.

The 49 House members, led by U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia of California, shared their views in a letter emailed to the leaders of the Fortune 1000. The move follows several major corporations saying in recent months that they would end or curtail their DEI initiatives.

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) went after Republicans on Wednesday for their use of an inaccurate chart on “illegal immigration in the U.S.” that was once on display during the July assassination attempt of Donald Trump.

Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.), at a hearing on the Biden administration’s border policies, initially used the chart and referred to it as Trump’s “favorite.” Trump has credited it for saving his life when he turned his head to point to it at the Pennsylvania rally where a gunman shot him in the ear.

Long Beach, like many other cities in California and across the country, is facing a housing crisis that is largely due to not building enough new homes. Most cities have lagged behind for decades, leaving a deficit that will require building thousands of new homes.

And although a supply oriented approach to the problem has been controversial in some places, cities are seeing results when it is implemented. In Minneapolis and Austin, rents fell after local governments ushered in new rules allowing the construction of more apartments.

Before a class of captivated high school seniors, Rep. Robert Garcia recounted the trajectory of his life: as a boy from humble beginnings in Peru, as a gay man raised in a conservative Catholic family, as an undocumented immigrant worried about his future and, now, as a member of Congress.

The students in an advanced placement government class at Ernest S. McBride Sr. High School in Long Beach peppered him with sharp questions, notably whether his roots and his background ever made him feel like a fraud among his peers.

Democratic U.S. Reps. Robert Garcia and Barbara Lee of California sent a letter on Thursday urging the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force to compel health insurers to provide free access to doxy PEP, a drug regimen for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections.

The USPSTF is an independent panel of experts in primary care and preventative medicine organized under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services whose primary responsibility is to evaluate the evidence on the safety and efficacy of medical screenings, counseling, and preventative medications.

Double platinum artist. Cooking show host. And now, Olympic torchbearer.

Snoop Dogg, the celebrity-rapper and Long Beach native will join a troupe of artists and delegates as representatives for the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

There, he will be tasked with carrying the Olympic torch through the northern Parisian streets of Saint-Denis, the second-to-last passing before the flame’s 68-day, 7,500-mile journey from Olympia, Greece ends at the Trocadéro, which fronts the Eiffel Tower.

A House California Democrat is proposing a bill to fund legal defense services for people in immigration court, where only about a third of processed immigrants have legal representation.
