Statement from Reps. Robert Garcia, Maxwell Frost, Yassamin Ansari, Maxine Dexter on Updates Regarding the Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia Case
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42), Congressman Maxwell Frost (FL-10), Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03), and Congresswoman Maxine Dexter (OR-03) released a joint statement following the latest updates regarding the case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who was held illegally in El Salvador after being wrongfully deported by the Trump Administration, released back to the United States, and was recently re-detained.
“From day one, the Trump Administration has worked to deny due process to Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Now, they are escalating their efforts to interfere with the justice system. The Supreme Court and lower courts have consistently ruled that Kilmar's rights were violated.
Now that Kilmar is back in the U.S. with an opportunity for his case to be heard in the courts, President Trump is trying to wrongfully deport him again, this time to Uganda, a country with which he has no ties. Every person has a right to due process and deserves an opportunity to defend themselves and access to counsel. We will continue to fight for due process and the Constitution.”
In April, Congressman Garcia, Congressman Frost, Congresswoman Ansari, and Congresswoman Dexter traveled to El Salvador to pressure the Trump Administration to comply with a Supreme Court order to facilitate the return of Abrego Garcia, who resided in Maryland with protected legal status and was unlawfully deported by the Trump Administration.
