Congressman Robert Garcia Statement on DOGE, Elon Musk Treasury Payments System Takeover
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42) released the following statement condemning Elon Musk’s takeover of the Treasury Department payment system, a non-political system that disperses trillions of dollars each year. This includes Social Security and Medicare benefits, tax credits for individuals and businesses, and grants and payments to government contractors.
“Elon Musk was not elected by the American people and should be nowhere near our treasury payments system,” said Congressman Robert Garcia. “Our Social Security, Medicare benefits, and private information are off limits and it’s insane that the world’s richest man is being given access to our records. As a Democratic Member of the DOGE Subcommittee, I will make sure we’re pushing back hard on this breach in security. No matter how hard President Trump tries, we will refuse to roll over as Elon Musk tries to take over our government.
Congressman Garcia has consistently championed government efficiency while protecting our democratic institutions. As a member of the House Oversight Committee, he has been instrumental in scrutinizing government operations to ensure transparency and accountability, passing two bills which later became law, to enhance government efficiency. Congressman Garcia pushed back on proposed cuts which will harm the middle class and working families. Congressman Garcia has been a vocal advocate for protecting programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, opposing any attempts to cut these vital services to fund tax benefits for the ultra-wealthy. He co-sponsored the Social Security 2100 Act, which comprehensively strengthens and expands Social Security for all Americans, and the Social Security Fairness Act, ensuring millions of public servants get the full benefits that they worked so hard to earn, which became law under President Biden.
