Congressman Garcia Announces Over $21 Million to Make Roadway Infrastructure Improvements in Los Angeles County

January 31, 2023

Today, Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42) announced that the U.S. Department of the Transportation has awarded a $21,494,665 grant to Los Angeles County to support the Florence-Firestone for All: Achieving Vision Zero in South Los Angeles project.

“As Mayor of Long Beach, I witnessed first-hand the vital role that accessible infrastructure plays in sustaining a thriving community. One of my top priorities in Congress is making sure that our streets are walkable, our bike lanes are accessible, and that our communities can continue to grow,” said Congressman Garcia. “Thanks to this investment, LA County will be able to repair critical roadways in the Florence-Firestone community.”

The Florence-Firestone for All: Achieving Vision Zero in South Los Angeles project will implement safety countermeasures in the community including ADA curb ramps, curb extensions, raised crosswalks, raised medians, pedestrian refuge islands, speed cushions, high-visibility crosswalks, sign improvements, and removing sections of roadway to reduce conflicts. In addition to infrastructure improvements, the County will undertake an education campaign in schools with teen drivers, and establish an education campaign for a Safe Routes for Seniors Program. The project will also engage the community in a public art campaign to encourage traffic calming and community support for improved roadway safety.

Under his leadership as Mayor, Long Beach piloted programs like tuition-free community college and a universal basic income pilot. He also passed measures to support community safety and rebuild our infrastructure, legalized and taxed cannabis while promoting social equity, and promoted open, honest and transparent governance by strengthening the city auditor, setting term limits, and creating ethics and redistricting commissions. His signature ballot initiative, Measure A, launched the largest infrastructure repair program in a generation, promoting good-paying union jobs.
