The San Diego Union-Tribune - In letter to congress members, CBP denies holding migrants in custody between border fences in San Diego
Congressional Democrats on the Homeland Security Committee are investigating Border Patrol’s practice earlier this year of holding migrants between the border walls in San Diego for days without access to food or sufficient water.
Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Long Beach, said it was a necessary move after Customs and Border Protection, the parent agency of Border Patrol, gave what he described as an inadequate response to an inquiry sent by him and several other members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, including San Diego’s Rep. Juan Vargas.
As documented by the Union-Tribune in early April, Border Patrol agents had been keeping migrants in the area between two layers of border wall as an open-air holding cell for extended periods of time since at least October of last year.
