Congressman Robert Garcia, Ranking Member on Oversight Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs Statement on Visit to DC Jail Where January 6th Insurrectionists Are Held

March 24, 2023

Washington D.C.- Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42) today released the following statement after his visit to the D.C. Jail where insurrectionists are being held. Congressman Garcia attended this visit on behalf of the Oversight Committee to cut through extreme Republican attempts to whitewash the dangerous realities of the January 6th insurrection. Congressman Garcia is a staunch defender of democracy and has been outspoken against the extremist lies spewed by Marjorie Taylor Green and others who insist on defending those who attacked our democracy and law enforcement on January 6th.

“Marjorie Taylor Greene is already telling lies about the conditions of the facility and saying that there was no insurrection on January 6. When we saw the inmates, my Republican colleagues rushed to them and treated them like celebrities rather than people who attacked our capitol police and our very democracy. The actions of our Republican colleagues inside the facility and their lies about the visit are shameful, ” said Congressman Robert Garcia. “The inmates that we saw were being treated fairly, and to be truthful, are being held in much better conditions than most Black and brown inmates in prisons across the country. As we left the facility, the January 6 inmates started chanting “Let’s Go Brandon.’ MAGA extremists’ claim that the January 6th defendants are political prisoners and have been subjected to inferior treatment is a complete fraud.

Congressman Garcia is a proud member of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, the main investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is a proud member of the “Truth Squad,” also known as Oversight Dems. He serves as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs. Under Congressman Garcia’s leadership as Mayor, Long Beach passed measures to support community safety and rebuild infrastructure, legalize, and tax cannabis while promoting social equity, and create ethics and redistricting commissions. His signature ballot initiative, Measure A, launched the largest infrastructure repair program in a generation, promoting good-paying union jobs for Southern Californians. He also serves as President of the Freshman class of Democrats.
