Congressman Robert Garcia Invites Long Beach City College Undocumented Student, future healthcare worker, as State of the Union Guest

February 6, 2023

Washington D.C. - Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42) today announced his guest, aspiring healthcare worker and undocumented local community college student, Alexis Muro, to President Biden’s State of the Union Address to Congress on February 7.

The State of the Union Address will highlight the achievements that House Democrats and President Biden have delivered over the past two years and the work that Democrats are doing to defend our American values from extreme Republicans.

“Alexis is a great example of how important it is to support immigrant communities and create pathways to citizenship. Hardworking students in our country deserve the same shot at the American Dream that was given to me. I am committed to ensure that students and leaders like Alexis have an opportunity to give back to our country.” said Congressman Robert Garcia.

“I am honored to join Congressman Garcia at the State of the Union Address to hear from President Biden about the progress we have made and the work we still have to do to defend our American values,” said Mr. Muro. “As an aspiring nurse, I am dedicated to serving my community and country. Congressman Garcia understands that immigrants make our country stronger and that is why I am so appreciative he chose me as his guest.”

Mr. Muro was born in Mexico and immigrated to California as a child. He graduated from Paramount High School with high honors as a member of the California Scholarship Federation. Currently, Mr. Muro is an undergraduate student at Long Beach City College in California – where Congressman Garcia formerly taught and worked - and is working to transfer to California State Long Beach as a nursing major. After earning his degree in nursing, he hopes to serve our community as a nurse at a local clinic. Congressman Garcia knows that the United States has a national need for a trained and well-prepared healthcare workforce, as well as for meaningful immigration reform, which is why he invited Mr. Muro as his guest.

Congressman Garcia immigrated to the United States as a young child and was raised in Southern California, becoming a proud U.S. citizen in his 20's. He holds an M.A. from the University of Southern California and an Ed.D. in Higher Education from Cal State Long Beach, where he also earned his B.A. in Communications. Congressman Garcia believes in defending our democracy, leveling the playing field with progressive education policy, addressing the climate crisis, supporting working families with increasing wages, and fighting to expand and protect essential rights for women, immigrants, and the LGBTQI+ community.
