Congressman Robert Garcia and Congressman Dan Goldman Move to Force a Vote to Expel George Santos From House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Robert Garcia called up his previous resolution to expel Congressman George Santos (NY-03) from Congress as a privileged resolution. Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) joined as a co-lead. This move forces House Republican leadership to schedule a vote on his expulsion within 48 hours. This resolution follows the conclusion of the House Ethics Committee’s investigation and subsequent release of their report, which concluded that George Santos defrauded his donors, filed false FEC reports, and repeatedly broke the law in order to fraudulently win his election last November.
Congressman Garcia and Congressman Goldman originally introduced their resolutions to expel Santos in February and August respectively – House Republicans overwhelmingly voted to refer the resolutions back to the House Ethics Committee in their efforts to protect Santos from expulsion.
“The time has finally come to remove George Santos from Congress. If we’re going to restore faith in government, we must start with restoring integrity in the U.S. House of Representatives. It is essential for the American people to have Representatives they can trust and who don’t build their careers on deceit and falsehoods. We have once again forced an expulsion vote on the House floor because enough is enough,” said Congressman Robert Garcia.
“George Santos is an admitted liar, fraud, and cheat, and the recent Ethics Committee report confirms what we’ve long known: George Santos is wholly unfit for public office. Today, I am once again calling for him to be expelled from Congress, as I have since the first day his lies were uncovered. Republicans no longer have any fictional excuse to protect Santos in order to preserve their narrow majority – to continue to do so would be a disgrace to the institution. It is time for the people of NY-03 to have real representation, and that starts with the immediate removal of George Santos,” said Congressman Dan Goldman.
Since early this year, Congressman Garcia has led the charge in calling for accountability for Santos’ numerous ethics violations. Congressman Garcia was the first member of Congress to take legislative action to expel Santos.
In February, Congressman Garcia introduced a resolution to expel George Santos from Congress. In May, Congressman Garcia forced a floor vote on this resolution, which every House Republican voted to refer to the Ethics Committee, rather than vote to expel.
