Congressman Garcia, President of the Freshman Class, Statement on Appointment to House Homeland Security Committee

Washington D.C.- Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42) today released the following statement following the announcement that he will be serving on the House Committee on Homeland Security. Congressman Robert Garcia has also been appointed to the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability.

“I am honored to have been appointed to the House Committee on Homeland Security. There is no greater priority than the security of the United States and ensuring the American people are protected from enemies foreign and domestic,” said Congressman Garcia. “We are at a pivotal time in our nation’s history:  Democracy is under attack, white supremacists pose the biggest domestic terror threat, and we just commemorated two year’s since the shameful attack on our nation’s Capitol. I am committed to fighting and pushing back on the lies that will be made by GOP Homeland Security members like Marjorie Taylor Greene to ensure that the American people are truly protected. As a proud immigrant and patriot, I will fight to defend our nation’s legacy and values that extreme MAGA republicans continue to put under attack.”

The GOP has made clear that they will be using taxpayer money to focus on nonsense partisan investigations ranging from calling for DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to be impeached over the GOP’s' disagreement with President Biden's policies on border security and immigration, to  stoking divisive culture war topics that will do nothing for the American people. 

To this day, Republican Chair Mark Green continues to deny the results of the 2020 election, and his colleague Marjorie Taylor Green also has yet to relent her false claim that the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump. Congressman Garcia is committed to serving as a strong voice to fight back against these attacks on truth and facts.

Congressman Garcia immigrated to the United States as a young child and was raised in Southern California, becoming a proud U.S. citizen in his 20's. He holds an M.A. from the University of Southern California and an Ed.D. in Higher Education from Cal State Long Beach, where he also earned his B.A. in Communications.

Congressman Garcia believes in defending our democracy and fighting to expand and protect essential rights for women, immigrants, and the LGBTQI+ community.
