Queerty - Rep. Robert Garcia roasts GOP, asks if Bert & Ernie are part of “extreme homosexual agenda”
Dems are taking their fight against Elon Musk and the orange man to the street.
Sesame Street, to be precise.
It all went down at a congressional hearing on Wednesday (March 26) where Democratic reps roasted the Republican Party for their harebrained efforts to defund American public media like NPR and PBS, where the beloved children’s show airs.
Unsurprisingly, the committee was led by “bleach-blonde bad-built butch-body” chairwoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who called the networks “radical, left-wing echo chambers” and accused them of “grooming” children.
Thankfully, Rep. Robert Garcia took her to task by using satire to make some points of his own.
The gay California Democrat adopted the MAGA cult’s McCarthy-esque rhetoric with some sardonic questions for PBS CEO Paula Kerger.
First, he inquired whether Elmo had ever been a member of the Communist Party. After all, he’s “obviously red” and “has a very dangerous message about sharing and helping each other.”
Then, Garcia (who went viral for a Real Housewives reference on the floor last year) asked about Cookie Monster’s employability under RFK Jr.’s anti-fast food platform and if we should fire Big Bird since Musk “fired USDA workers who have been working on the bird flu.”
(“We would like to keep Big Bird,” Kerger chuckled in response.)
But the big kicker came when Garcia showed a picture of Bert and Ernie.
“These two guys actually live together,” he said. “They’re friends. They’re supportive of each other. Now, that might be triggering to [MTG] and some on this committee … Are Bert and Ernie part of an extreme homosexual agenda?”
LOL.
After Kerger obviously replied no, Garcia explained that while he was “using some humor,” defunding public television “is actually not funny.”
“A large majority of Americans say they trust PBS, and that’s exactly why extremists are trying to tear it down,” he said, adding that public broadcasting is a “cherished part of our national fabric” and the GOP is merely trying to “silence media voices they don’t like.”
Garcia wasn’t the only member to crack jokes and prove his points either.
When Rep. Greg Casar of Texas took the stand, he evoked the name of LGBTQ+ icon Miss Piggy to show that the House’s DOGE subcommittee — ew — was looking in the wrong places for mismanaged funds.
“To your knowledge, has Miss Piggy ever been caught trying to funnel billions of dollars in government contracts to herself and her companies,” he asked.
While Kermit’s on-and-off girlfriend isn’t guilty, Casar pointed out that “Elon Musk has.”
Still, no one said it better than Garcia at the conclusion of his questioning.
“The message today is very, very simple: If we’re going to get rid of any puppeteers, we should get rid of the one that’s actually controlling D*n*ld Tr*ump,” he said. “Fire Elon Musk and save Elmo.”
👏 👏 👏
And might we add that whatever Bert and Ernie do behind closed doors is their own damn business!!!
