LGBTQ Nation - “Failure”: Gay congressman celebrates Trump firing “glam” DHS Sec. Kristi Noem

March 5, 2026

Gay Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) celebrated President Donald Trump’s Thursday firing of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Trump praised Noem’s performance and said he will replace her at the end of the month with anti-LGBTQ+ Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK).

“Well, now we don’t have to impeach her,” wrote Garcia on X. Garcia has regularly criticized Noem as the ranking member and lead Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability.

Noem recently faced intense questioning by the committee for alleged misconduct at her agency, including corrupt financial dealings and widespread brutality and civil rights violations by federal immigration agents overseen by DHS (including the killing of queer Minneapolitan mother of three Renee Good).

Trump was reportedly frustrated with Noem’s poor headlines and performance under the committee’s questioning and had been asking Republican advisors whether to fire her before making his Thursday announcement, NBC News reported.

“Secretary Noem has been a failure since she took office,” Garcia said in a statement shortly after her firing, “and her termination has been a long time coming. She oversaw abusive immigration raids that killed American citizens, misused hundreds of millions of dollars on her glam campaign, was responsible for countless violations of the Constitution, and more. Oversight Democrats led the fight to hold her accountable, and we will keep fighting for justice.”

Trump said Noem will become “Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” an initiative that he described as a “new security initiative in the western hemisphere.” Noem has expressed excitement about her new role.
